Teacher's Guides and Resources

Many of the Newspapers in Education programs include teacher’s guides. These guides are written for a variety of grade levels and subjects, and also meet California state standards.

In this area, we will also publish other information, which you may find helpful for your lesson planning, such as Internet resources and links.

Press Ahead!: A Teacher's Guide to Creating Student Newspapers: This tab, created by the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, is a teaching tool and planning guide for creating a student newspaper. www.nieteacher.org/fbnie: This site sponsored by the NIE Teacher Institute offers more than 300 instructional resources, including high-quality teacher's guides, serial stories, student supplements, character education materials, subject-specific resources, video and audio teacher training modules and the popular NIE Instructional Calendar. These resources address the goals of No Child Left Behind and are standards based.

www.newseum.org: Check out this cool web site created by the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Share the news of the world with your students with one of the site's most popular features -- Today's Front Pages -- which showcases more than 600 newspapers from all over the world.

www.naafoundation.org: Check out this web site from the Newspaper Association of America Foundation. On the site you'll find a ton of information, including news about the foundation, history, research reports, links to quizzes, YEA information, curriculum guides, links to podcasts, scholastic journalism information, contests, awards, calendar, directory and much more.

www.parade.com: Go to this Web site every week for a current event's quiz and new teacher's guide that will help you connect students to the Sunday Fresno Bee and the world. This site is a fantastic free resource you won't want to miss.

NIEteacher.org: A variety of downloadable resources are available courtesy of The Bee's NIE department and the non-profit Newspaper in Education Institute. To view these resources, go to the page and scroll down to see the entire list. Click on the material you wish to access. A log-in box will appear. Enter the following:

www.surfnetkids.com: Syndicated columnist Barbara J. Feldmen is dedicated to finding the best Web sites to enhance your students' education. You may read her printed column every Tuesday in The Bee’s Life section or visit her online at www.surfnetkids.com. She offers an ever-changing list of current topics, as well as a Printable Club designed for educators. The club is available for a nominal cost and includes Web site information that can be integrated into K-12 curriculum.

www.kidscoop.com : If you’re looking for new lesson ideas, Kid Scoop is the place. Check out Kid Scoop Extra, a new e-mail worksheet feature available to teachers for a nominal fee. You’ll receive five student-learning pages each week e-mailed directly to you, plus daily lesson planning sheets. www.kidscoop.com also has a variety of other features available to you, including a lesson library and material on teaching with newspapers.
